Are you avoiding coffee because of heartburn, acid reflux, chronic stomach discomfort, or other gastrointestinal issues?

I get it, and I’ve been there. Coffee turned its back on me a while ago.

I went through a phase where my beloved coffee was giving me heartburn. Here are 5 ways I’ve discovered that will help you avoid coffee heartburn.

How to Avoid Coffee Heartburn

  1. Add a teaspoon of baking soda in your coffee
  2. Switch to a lower acid coffee
  3. Cold brew your coffee
  4. Try coffee with less caffeine, like Nitro Brew or Choclevate
  5. Try Smart Coffee, it’s gentler than regular coffee and has so many extra benefits.

#1. Add a teaspoon of baking soda in your coffee

I came across this tip when researching ideas for my recent article, “How to Make Smart Coffee Taste Better.

Coffee can be naturally acidic depending on the type of beans that are used. By adding baking soda to the beans or directly to your brewed coffee, the baking soda acts as a neutralizer for that acidity.

Research on the effects of baking soda on coffee has alluded to the fact that this combination may only help people that have digestive issues. It would be interesting to know if people that experience heartburn after drinking coffee would be able to avoid heartburn by adding baking soda to their coffee.

If you haven’t tried it, give it a shot. The baking soda doesn’t add any flavor to your coffee and could really make a big impact on reducing coffee heartburn.

#2. Switch to a lower acid coffee

If you experience heartburn with your coffee more than 1 or 2 times a week, you may be experiencing GERD – Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.

According to WebMD:

GERD is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD. Doctors believe that some people suffer from GERD due to a condition called hiatal hernia. In most cases, GERD can be relieved through diet and lifestyle changes; however, some people may require medication or surgery

It’s been said that you should reduce the intake of coffee and tea to help improve GERD. Reducing the intake of certain foods will help reduce the symptoms of GERD. But, if you are like me, you need your daily cup of coffee!

Instead of giving up your coffee to help reduce GERD and heartburn, try a lower-acid version of coffee a try. Some low acid versions to consider are:

#3 Cold Brew Your Coffee

Have you ever tried to cold brew your coffee? I have to admit, it’s delicious and a nice, refreshing treat on hot mornings. Here’s some recipes including how to cold brew your smart coffee.

Another great benefit of cold-brewing your coffee is that cold brewing makes coffee less acidic.

According to a study done by Toddy (the inventor of the cold brew), cold-brewed coffee is 67 percent less acidic than hot-brewed. Without all that acid, the burnt flavor that plagues hot-brewed coffee is eliminated. Plus, the reduced acid makes it healthier for your stomach and your teeth.

You’ll also enjoy more flavor and less bitterness in your daily cup of coffee.

#4 Try coffee with less caffeine, like Nitro Brew or Choclevate

Nitro coffee has taken the coffee world by storm since it’s introduction several years ago. Not only is the taste a bit sweeter and smoother than regular coffee, nitro coffee is less acidic.

Of course, I love Nitro Smart Coffee and it’s become my daily go-to for my nootropic-infused cup of coffee.

In general, Nitro coffee brew:

One of the major differences between nitro and regular coffee is their respective levels of acidity.

Many of the acids found in regular coffee appear only at higher temperatures of 195–205°F (90–96°C).

Therefore, brewing nitro coffee at a lower temperature can result in significantly less acidity than that of regular coffee.

This mildness may be especially beneficial for some people, as the acids found in coffee can irritate your stomach and cause digestive problems.

The low number of acids also provides a unique taste and decreases the bitterness of nitro coffee.

However, cold-brewed coffee may have fewer beneficial compounds such as chlorogenic acid, an antioxidant that supplies much of the acidity in regular coffee.

Nitro Brew Smart Coffee enhances natural nitric oxide production with antioxidant capability. As an instant coffee, Nitro smart coffee uses clinically proven ingredients that help generate efficient blood flow, boost nutrient and oxygen delivery.

#5 Try Smart Coffee, it’s gentler than regular coffee and has so many extra benefits.

A friend introduced me to something called smart coffee. This coffee from Elevate claims to be “happy coffee” that will help with weight management, mental clarity, memory, and creativity. The friend that introduced me was also losing weight by just adding this stuff to her coffee.

I was hesitant because of my issues with coffee, and it turns out what works for her didn’t exactly work for me. Of course, I immediately went online to find reviews of Elevate Coffee and I saw several positive reviews from people that had reduced their coffee intake by using this smart coffee.

I discovered that Elevate smart coffee is very easy on my stomach! When I couple the coffee with the supplement Xanthomax, it sets my mood for the day. Learn more about the DOSE combo here.

According to the company, “Elevate is a great tasting micro-ground, functional coffee that contains a proprietary blend of Nootropic ingredients designed to assist with mental clarity, memory, and energy. The Nootropics in Elevate are all-natural amino acids typically found in protein-rich foods but not always easy to get from diet alone.”

According to Wikipedia, Nootropics (English pronunciation: /noʊ.əˈtrɒpɪks/ noh-ə-TROP-iks), also known as smart drugs and cognitive enhancers, are drugs, supplements, and other substances that improve cognitive function, particularly executive functions, memory, creativity, or motivation, in healthy individuals.

After researching exactly what the term “Nootropics” means, I was instantly intrigued. As a full-time working mom with two kids, a husband, and a crazy busy lifestyle, I was struggling. Memory issues, stress, weight gain…all those fun things. So, I thought I would give it a try.

There are so many advantages in addition to being my coffee stomach ache cure. Read more about nootropics in “The Beginners Guide to Nootropics.

I drink this every morning – well at least during the week. I like to take a break on the weekends so my body doesn’t get used to the nootropics and stop working. One scoop of Elevate Smart Coffee has enough caffeine to meet my needs.

It’s been a little over a year since I started using smart coffee and the benefits for me have been very real. My mood level is constant – this has been an issue since having kids. My memory has noticeably improved. I’ve noticed a slight weight loss, but nothing significant, yet.

Elevate is very clear that their product needs a month or so for you to begin seeing results. So, get started today!

Best of all, I do NOT miss my daily cup of bitterness in my old coffee cup. By simply adding a little Elevate coffee into my smoothie, I get enough caffeine for the day. And I don’t miss the “stomach secretions” and gut issues I had before.

Turmeric and Heartburn

Turmeric can be an effective supplement to help with heartburn.

Today, turmeric is recognized as an alternative therapy for heartburn, inflammation, and stomach ulcers.

If you eat curry, you’ve consumed turmeric. It’s the ingredient that gives curry its spicy flavor and vibrant color.

Turmeric’s most active ingredient is called curcumin. It’s thought to be responsible for most of turmeric’s health benefits. Curcumin is a polyphenol antioxidant. It’s said to have potent antiviral, antibacterial, and anticancer capabilities.

In a recent study, acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) may be caused by inflammation and oxidative stress. The study suggests GERD should be treated with antioxidants and anti-inflammatories.

A separate study showed the anti-inflammatory effects of curcumin prevented esophageal inflammation. Turmeric and its extract curcumin are both said to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Because of this, turmeric may relieve GERD. More research is needed to determine whether turmeric can reliably treat symptoms of acid reflux.

Some people report turmeric makes acid reflux worse. This may be due to its peppery qualities. Taking turmeric for a long period of time or in high doses may increase your risk of indigestion, nausea, and diarrhea.
